How to Build a Simple Daily Haircare Routine

How to Build a Simple Daily Haircare Routine

A simple daily haircare routine is four steps: cleanse, condition, moisturize and seal, with a mask once a week. On most days you'll only touch two of them.

We like routines that survive a busy Tuesday. This one does, because the daily part takes about as long as finding your keys.

If you're building a haircare brand, read the routine as a product list. A private label haircare products manufacturer can make something for each step.

What Are the Steps in a Simple Haircare Routine?

There are five, laid out below, and only moisturizing and sealing happen every day.

Step

How Often

Product Type

Cleanse the scalp

Every wash

Scalp shampoo

Condition

Every wash

Rinse-out conditioner

Moisturize

Daily

Leave-in or moisturizer

Seal

Daily

Hair oil or butter

Deep condition

Weekly

Mask

Wash days are the long ones. The other days are a quick leave-in and a few drops of oil at the mirror.

Already doing three of these? Bring in the missing one and leave it be for a couple of weeks. Hair doesn't change overnight.

How Should You Care for Your Scalp?

The scalp gets its own shampoo. We're fans of tea tree and peppermint here. It leaves a cold, minty tingle that's still there after the towel.

For a drier scalp, we'd point people toward a scalp oil made with black castor oil. A private label haircare products manufacturer can make both, which lets customers choose by feel.

Almost everyone misses the back of their head. Four rough sections fix that.

How Do You Moisturize Hair Between Washes?

You want the hair damp when the leave-in or moisturizer goes on. If it's not a wash day, a few spritzes of water will do.

We like peach and honey for this step. Most people overdo it at first. Honestly, a coin-sized blob goes a long way if you start at mid-length.

Your customers won't all have the same hair, of course. Ask your private label haircare products manufacturer for a lighter version and a richer one.

Should You Use an Oil or a Butter to Seal Hair?

We'd give fine hair oil and thick hair butter. It goes on last, over the moisturizer, like a lid on a pot.

Fine hair flops the minute you overdo it, and three or four drops of oil is about the limit. Thick hair that soaks everything up is a different story. That's where butter comes in, and the hair stays soft till dinner.

Rub a little between your hands, then start at the ends. If it looks greasy in the mirror at lunch, you've used too much; go lighter tomorrow.

How Often Should You Use a Hair Mask?

Weekly is enough for nearly everyone. More often than that rarely helps.

Shampoo, then towel off a bit. Work the mask through and leave it as long as the label says. A warm towel around your head while you wait is a nice touch.

Get your private label haircare products manufacturer to match the mask to your other formulas. Give it a fixed slot in the week, too, because "whenever I remember" tends to mean never.

What Should You Ask a Haircare Manufacturer?

Two things, mainly: which product covers each step, and how a formula becomes a filled, labeled bottle.

  • What covers the scalp step, and what covers the mask?
  • Which ingredient lines can you do for each one?
  • What happens between "formula approved" and boxes arriving at my door?
  • What do you need from me before we can start?

Write things down while they talk. Three calls in, details blur.
